These include supermarkets, banking, local doctor, hairdresser/barber, hardware stores, household appliances, bars and restaurants, and a municipal market selling fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, and cooked breakfasts and lunch.
Why Move to Progreso, Yucatán?
Pros
- Affordable Coastal Living: Progreso is one of the more affordable beach towns in Mexico. It is also close to other smaller beach towns such as Chelem, Chicxulub Puerto, Telchac, Sisal and Celestun.
- Proximity to Mérida: Not everyone who moves to Yucatan wants to live in Merida. However, having this major city less than an hour away is a major advantage for Progreso. Enjoy small-town life with larger city benefits, such as access to healthcare, shopping, and an international airport.
- INM Office in Town: Progreso has its own immigration office, making it easier to apply for or renew residency in Mexico. The INM office in Progreso does not use the online appointment system. Appointments are booked in person at the office – arrive early to secure an appiointment. Immigration to Mexico operates from Progreso. Contact us to discuss your needs, including appointments.
- Low-key Mixed Community: While Progreso is gradually growing, and well-serviced for its size, it maintains its authentic local charm over the resort town vibes of nearby tourist centres, such as Playa del Carmen and Cancun.
- Accessibility: Progreso is still small enough to walk or bike from one end to the other; it has flat roads and an uncomplicated infrastructure. Many residents get by without a car, preferring scooters or bikes instead. Public transport such as buses and taxis operate for longer distances, such as Merida – Progreso via the busline Autoprogreso.
Cons
- Limited Services: Specialized healthcare, very special shopping or legal needs still require trips to Merida.
- Climate and humidity: Yucatan is known for its exceptionally high temperatures, especially during the summer, which can exceed 40૦C. Progreso benefits from its coastal location, and it is 2-3°C cooler than Merida all year round. However, it is no exception to the heat, humid conditions and sea air; these can be equally hard on both household items and humans.
- Language Barrier: While English is spoken in most restaurants along the town’s long and impressive promenade, most public services operate in Spanish.
- Seasonal Fluctuation: Progreso gets busier during the winter with the arrival of US and Canadian snowbirds. It is also a popular cruise ship stop, which supports the local tourism businesses. However, these high numbers of day trippers may not be attractive for all residents.
