What to do if your Temporary Resident card is about to expire or has already expired

Renewals of a Temporary Resident card should be started within one month before expiration date. You can see the expiration date of your Temporary Resident card at the bottom of the front part of your Resident card. In the card above, the expiration date is 04/08/2014 (Day/Month/Year). 1. In the event that you are OUT OF MEXICO and your card expires, you must return within 55 days after the expiration date if you do not want to lose your resident status entirely. After arrival, you will have 5 days to start with the RENEWAL procedure at an Immigration office (INM). You can collect all the necessary forms, such as the form to be completed online, a letter of request, a personal data form, original and copy of your passport, expired resident card pictures and payment of INM taxes at the end of the process. To understand it clearly, find the complete requirements and to be sure that you have all the forms, it will be advisable to go to the INM office and get complete clarification. 2. If you are IN MEXICO and your Temporary Resident card expires, you will have 60 days to start with the process of REGULARIZATION to get a new resident card. The forms that you need are the same as the ones described above in 1. But you have to pay INM taxes at the beginning and the end of the process. To understand it clearly, find the complete requirements and to be sure that you have all the forms, it is advisable to go to the INM office and get complete clarification, as well. Some weeks after the application, you will receive an email from the INM instructing you about a fee that you will need to pay at any bank. The forms to be able to pay this fee are available online and at the INM office, too. After paying the fee, you must re-visit the INM office to hand in the proof of payment from the bank and receive a notice that you have fulfilled their requirements. Some weeks later, another email will be sent, this time saying that you need an appointment to provide a good reason as to why you did not renew your resident card on time. Also you will need to bring two witnesses with you. The witnesses should carry their IDs or their resident cards in case they are not Mexican nationals. It is VERY important to take into account that you CANNOT leave the country during this REGULARIZATION process. You must remain in Mexico until you get your new resident card, which will be issued several months after the application, in Riviera Maya.
